Every few years it’s only natural to want to give your home an update.  But, buying all new furniture or replacing cabinets requires some serious cash - and that’s not always in the budget. Thankfully there are plenty of ways to breath new life in your home without breaking the bank.  Actually, most of these simple ideas can be done in just one afternoon!

1. Create Your Own Cushion Covers

New throw pillows can bring new life to an old couch.  Plus, this napkin-cushion cover craft is so simple, you can do it yourself!  Cheap and brightly colored, cloth napkins are the perfect way to really customize your cushions in a style that you love.  No sewing required!  (This tutorial from Centsational Girl uses iron-on hem tape instead.) 2. Change Hardware

Switching out the hardware on an old dresser, vanity, or set of cabinets can make them look like new.  Best of all, you don’t have to be a handyman to do it.  For maximum ease, try to find hardware that’s the same width as your existing handles and pulls.  Or, if you’re happy with the shape of your current hardware but want to change the color, simply grab a can of spray paint.  Remove the handles from the drawers or cabinets first, and give them time to dry. 3. Get Familiar with StikWood

With this fairly new and super innovative product, you can give a natural look to small DIY projects with zero carpentry skills.  Sugar and Cloth used StikWood to completely change the look of her basic Ikea Malm bed - and we’re super impressed with the results!  Just peel away the adhesive backing, and stick it on.  Yes, it’s really that simple. 4. Add a Coat of Paint

A fresh coat of paint will definitely give that old hand-me-down furniture some new life.  How much you want to paint - now that’s up to you!  We’ve seen lots of beautiful dipped furniture where just the bottom of the legs have been painted.  Or, just paint the outside of a beautiful wooden end table, like the example above.  Of course, you can certainly paint the whole piece too.  Either way, it’ll feel like you went out and bought some brand new stuff! 5. Spray Paint Shelves, Bookcases, and Baskets

There’s nothing that a can of spray paint can’t fix.  Give basic bookcases a more high end look by picking up some silver or gold metallic spray paint at your local hardware store.  Spray paint an old storage basket in a beautiful new hue.  The possibilities for this simple furniture makeover are endless!  The Happy Homemaker even has tips for spray painting fabric. 6. Replace Furniture Legs

You probably don’t think that you notice furniture legs, but it’s surprising how much this change can actually transform the look of a space.  If you think the legs on your couch are looking a little awkward or tattered, Pretty Pegs has a tutorial for making your own!  We think you’ll definitely be inspired by these before and after looks. 7. Don’t Be Afraid of Wallpaper

Despite what you’ve heard (or maybe experienced) wallpaper is your friend!  Ok, maybe it can be a little fussy when trying to use it on an entire wall, but, when it comes to small projects, it’s certainly possible to get along.  Update shelving, old wooden chairs, or coffee tables by adding wallpaper can pack a big design punch - and even give you a nice pop of color!
