Wood Coasters

If he enjoys drinks on the patio, make them rustic wood coasters to rest their glasses on. To carry out this project you will require straight branches that are no smaller than 3.5 inches in diameter, a hand saw, sandpaper and clear varnish. Start off by cutting the branches into sections that are half an inch thick. Afterwards, use your sandpaper to sand each section and then coat each piece of wood in clear varnish. Alternatively you can choose not to varnish the coasters and leave the wood untreated, as varnish usually darkens the color of the coasters.

Cut two pounds of beef into 1/4 inch-thick slices and add it to the marinade. Make sure each slice is fully coated in the marinade before covering and placing the bowl in the refrigerator for six to eight hours. Preheat the oven to 200°F and pat dry the beef with paper towels. Arrange the beef on wire racks and sprinkle with coarsely ground pepper. Bake for four hours or until the jerky is firm and almost dry but still chewy. Let it cool before packaging it up.
